Background

This project is needed to remove sediment surrounding the intake structure at Brighton Dam, as well as removing sediment that has accumulated upstream of the dam since its original construction in the 1940’s.

Purpose

Once complete the reservoir’s drinking water storage capacity will increase by about 4 million gallons of water.

Timeline

The project will start on May 18, 2023 and be completed by October 31, 2023. Most work will occur during weekday daylight hours (7:00 am – 5:00pm). If needed, weekend work may occur.

Construction Impact

Due to lower reservoir levels, all boat ramps on Triadelphia Reservoir will be closed, and no boating will be allowed. Additionally, the Greenbridge and Pig Tail recreation areas will be closed to ensure public safety due to the construction activity. As a result, shoreline fishing will only be available at Big Branch and Triadelphia Recreation areas. Recreational activities on T. Howard Duckett Reservoir will not be impacted.

Residents can expect 15 to 25 daily dump truck round trips between Greenbridge and Pig Tail recreation areas during work hours. Trucks will follow all posted speed limit signs and drive along the following roadways: Greenbridge Rd, New Hampshire Ave., Brighton Dam Rd., Highland Rd., Triadelphia Mill Rd., and Greenbridge Rd. (see map) Trucks will be lined to reduce sediment leaking during transport. Minimal noise is expected from the trucks traveling along the route and around the recreation areas. There will also be construction equipment at the Pig Tail recreation area to spread the sediment.

Project Update

November 10, 2022

The installation of the sediment removal project dewatering facility has begun (located on an adjacent field from the Pig Tail Recreation Area). The erosion and sediment control devices are being installed at the site and should be completed by the end of December 2022.  As a safety precaution, the archery deer hunting area is being closed during the installation of these sediment control devices. The installation of this sediment control device will not impact Pig Tail recreational and parking area. Currently, the Pig Tail Boat ramp is closed since, Triadelphia Reservoir water levels are dropping.
