Coordinating WSSC Water's Homeland Security, Emergency Preparedness and Policing programs
WSSC Water's Police Department is made up of law enforcement professionals who are courteous, service-oriented, ethical and respectful of others. We are a small agency charged with a critical mission: protecting valuable water resources and facilities across more than 1,000 square miles of Montgomery and Prince George's counties. We accomplish this by using innovative technology, state-of-the-art training, and strategically deploying our resources by boat, ATV, vehicle, and foot.
Our mission is to ensure the safety of WSSC Water's employees, contractors and customers. We are dedicated to providing professional, impartial, ethical and excellent public safety services to all.
The division is led by Police and Homeland Security Director David McDonough.
Before September 11, 2001, WSSC Water's security was overseen by an already established security unit. However, after the terrorist attacks, Maryland's legislature created the WSSC Police Department to guard WSSC Water's infrastructure and water supply against sabotage or acts of terrorism.
Within the Department are sections that have specific areas of focus:
Operations: The Operations Section consists of uniformed police officers who provide 24-hour-per-day security to employees, customers and visitors; patrol more than 250 fixed facilities; patrol and protect 6,000 acres of WSSC Water watershed property using foot patrols, 4x4 vehicles, all-terrain vehicles and boats.

Investigative: The Investigative Section looks into criminal, civil and/or administrative violations against WSSC Water or violations occur on Commission property. It also approves security authorizations for those seeking access to WSSC Water facilities and investigates reported acts of employee misconduct.
