We can't stop time and we can't stop aging - the biggest challenges to WSSC Water's pipeline infrastructure and systems.

WSSC Water is well into its second century of service - we've been serving Montgomery County and Prince George's County residents since 1918 - and in that time we've grown in many ways: We now serve almost two million people, and our water and sewer pipeline system has expanded to almost 6,000 miles.

As we've grown, we've faced two never-ending challenges: time and age. Time ages the pipelines and components that deliver fresh, clean water to you. And over time, our various systems need to be repaired or replaced entirely.

We meet this challenge with major efforts to repair, rehabilitate and replace systems and components, and with innovative programs that aim to keep us ahead of the work necessary to keep WSSC Water in tip-top shape. Learn more by following the links below.

Aging infrastructure

Just imagine: It takes almost 6,000 miles of underground pipelines to deliver water and sewer service to our customers in Montgomery and Prince George's counties, and that requires a major maintenance effort.

Water Main breaks

Water main breaks can occur anytime, but when the weather turns colder - look out! A sudden temperature drop causes a kind of shock to pipeline; water temperature below 40 degrees Fahrenheit can make pipes more brittle, which means more water main breaks in the winter compared to other months. We are serious about quickly repairing water main breaks, especially in cold weather.
