WSSC Water cares about its carbon footprint! As a result, WSSC Water  developed inventories of annual GHG emissions for all operations for the calendar years (CY) 2005 through 2016. The inventories quantify the GHG emissions that result from the energy-intensive processes required to treat and distribute potable water for public use and to collect and treat wastewater before discharge. Based on the inventory results, a 20-yr plan of action was developed. The action plan includes strategies to reduce future GHG emissions at WSSC Water by 10 percent every five years through the year 2030 using demonstrated technologies and practices available at the present time.

An initial report was prepared by CH2M HILL and Shah & Associates in November 2012, Greenhouse Gas Action Plan, which summarized the findings of the inventory and outlined the proposed GHG emission reduction strategies. The report also provided future considerations for additional strategies to meet the ultimate goal by 2050. The report has been updated annually since 2012.
